The Magic Crystal is a magical artifact that is owned by Princess Butterfly, who wears it as an amulet. It is the source of her magic power and only works for someone with a pure heart.

Appearance[]

In the 1969 series, the design for the crystal amulet tends to change each season.

The crystal amulet as it appears in the 1998 series.

In the 1998 series, the crystal amulet is heptagonal and peach-colored with a gold frame. Unlike in the 1969 series, the amulet's design remained the same throughout the series.

Variants[]

False Crystal[]

Amulet 4

In the 1972 episode "The New Crystal," Frank swaps Princess Butterfly's crystal amulet with a corrupted version called the False Crystal, which can make any living entity malevolent, like Princess Butterfly, who became malicious due to its effects.

In the 1969 series, the False Crystal looks similar to the Magic Crystal's initial appearance in the first season, except it is black-colored instead of multicolored.

In the 1998 series, however, it is hexagonal and purple-colored with black lining, making it more of an opposite to the Magic Crystal.

True Crystal[]

Amulet5

The True Crystal is a stronger version of the Magic Crystal that can banish malicious magic, but was so powerful that Princess Butterfly fell into a coma after being cured from the effect of the False Crystal. It replaced the Magic Crystal after Frank destroyed the latter in "Quest For the True Crystal."

In the 1969 series, the True Crystal bears a resemblance to the Magic Crystal's season three design, but it is more bluish in color and tends to sparkle a lot.

In the 1998 series, however, it is a clear eight-pointed star-shaped crystal that emits a glowing rainbow aura around it.

Trivia[]

  • The amulet's season two design was used in HeyKids Studios's logo introduced in 1970.
  • Princess Butterfly has lost the Magic Crystal in three episodes, "Saving the Crystal" from the 1969 series, "The Missing Crystal" and "Runaway Raven," the latter two from the 1998 series.
  • The Magic Crystal is shown to be indestructible, as during one of the fight scenes in "The Missing Crystal," when it was dropped from a rather great height.
